Although most people wouldn’t immediately name the Lord as one of those things they think of when they hear the word “New York City,” there is no doubt in the minds of the Southeastern team that he is a very real part of life in the city.
As the team packed their bags and drove out of the city this morning – although ready to go home – they are all still energized after having seen God move in the hearts of New Yorkers this week.
Only yesterday, Tony, a man you prayed for earlier in the week, committed his life to Christ. Under the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the encouragement of several team members, he turned the authority over to Jesus. There are countless numbers of other people who have been engaged in conversations this week, being given the Gospel, a message they may have never heard before now. Others have committed to try attending The Gallery Church, and investigating the claims of Christ for themselves this week.
The Lord is at work among the people of New York City. He is calling them back to himself – drawing them into his loving embrace in the midst of a city that is hard and often unloving. People like Katie – strung out on drugs but verbally called to come back to Christ by student Eddie – have been affected this week by the work of these students.
The students have been affected too – given an opportunity to taste and see that the Lord is good, and to see how they can be used in God’s global plan of redemption. Although they did not leave the boundaries of our country, they saw that the cities and people of the United States are equally as much a mission field as any foreign land. They were able to see how God desires to reach the nations through urban centers like New York City, and how opportunities to speak the name of Christ exist in every situation.
In what situations do you find yourselves on a daily basis? Whether or not a subway commute, a daily coffee stop or time at the park is part of your routine, may you live intentionally, just as the students have been doing all week. Look for the opportunities to share God’s love with those who may have never heard his name before, and with those who may have become hardened to the Gospel message.
“But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’” -Romans 10:14-15
